2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Weight Loss and Serving Sizes

Serving sizes have a direct correlation with weight loss and weight control. You've all heard the phrase "It's not what you eat rather how much you eat."

What is a Serving Size?

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) a "serving" is a unit of measure used to describe the amount of food recommended from each food group. It is the amount of food listed on the Nutrition Facts panel on packaged food or the amount of food recommended in the Food Guide Pyramid and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

WebMD in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic state, "The best way to determine the amount of food in a given serving is to look at the Nutrition Facts label and measure it out. Although this may not be practical or that much fun, if you are able to take the time, you will soon be able to "eyeball" the amount of food and know whether there is too much or too little" WebMD Portion Control and Weight Loss article.

In order to help with weight loss Healthy Plates developed portion control plates as a tool to help aid in weight loss and weight control. Our portion control plates are divided into three sections, 1/2 fruit and vegetables, 1/4 lean protein and 1/4 whole grains. These serving are based on the daily recommendations suggested by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Every 5 years The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) jointly publishes Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the newest publication was released January 2005. These guidelines for people 2 and over include caloric intake, servings by food group and serving size. Please view the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Weight and Nutrition*
