Portion Control and Nutrition

A "portion" is the amount of a specific food you choose to eat for dinner, snack, and on other occasions. Portions do not always equal serving sizes and can be bigger or smaller than the recommended food servings.

It is important to understand the difference between portions and servings. For example the USDA recommends 6 ounces of grains daily. 1 ounce equals 1 slice of bread, if you were to have a sandwich for lunch you would consider your sandwich your portion, however you need to count that portion as 2 servings of grains leaving 4 servings for the remainder of the day. Understanding this difference along with controlling portion sizes and keeping track or servings will help control your weight.
