2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans


Children and Obesity

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) Childhood Obesity is on the Rise and has doubled in the last 20 to 30 years with currently one in 5 children overweight.  This increase does not discriminate between gender, race or age groups.  Although genetics play a role the main reason for childhood obesity is the same as in adults, the consumption of too many calories and the lack of activity.  And just like in adults overweight children have more health risks including type 2 diabetes also known as adult-onset diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure (risk factors for heart disease), sleep apnea and other diseases.

Portion control plates teach children healthy eating habits by controlling the amount of food at mealtime and allowing them to take charge of their health by serving themselves the recommended daily amount of lean protein, vegetables, and whole grains at mealtime. Portion control along with increased activity will help your child to a healthier weight.  Encourage your child to be active and choose outdoor activities you can do together.  Be a good role model by providing healthier eating and a healthier life style.

Healthy Plates developed portion control plates as a tool to help aid in weight loss and weight control. Our portion control plates are divided into three sections:

1/2 fruit and vegetables
1/4 lean protein
1/4 whole grains

Serving sizes are based on the daily recommendations suggested by the Department of Health and Human Services.
